Kai Xin Chen ’14 is the third Haverford alum to participate in the Math for America (MfA) Fellowship, a five-year program that includes one year of graduate school and four years of teaching in public schools. Chen will be taking classes at City College of New York and student teaching under the guidance of an experienced, distinguished MfA “Master” teacher. By next spring, she will earn her master’s degree in secondary mathematics education.

Chen, a mathematics major, says she has long considered teaching as a profession. Her decision to apply for the MfA fellowship was guided by her experiences at Haverford as a leader in several student organizations: the Asian Students Association, Customs freshman orientation program, and BLAST student tech crew. “I had learned how important it was to have a supportive community and dependable team,” Chen says. “I knew I wanted something similar after college.” The MfA program provides a supportive network of peers and mentors, and Chen says she is excited to start building those new relationships as she learns to teach math in an engaging manner.
