Though many Growth and Structure of Cities majors become urban planners and architects, Maryland native Mariah Braxton ’14 knew she wanted to pursue a different career path. After receiving guidance from her thesis advisor and Haverford’s Center for Career and Professional Advising, she finally discovered the right fit: a consulting position at IBM.
Braxton took note of IBM because of its Smarter Cities initiative, which assists urban leaders with infrastructure, human services, and planning and management. “The more I read about Smarter Cities, the more interested I was in working for IBM,” Braxton says, “and consulting in the public sector was a way for me to get involved.” In July, she will begin the company’s two-year Consulting by Degrees program. The program provides entry-level consultants with structured learning and practical experience under the guidance of a mentor.
“I am excited to be surrounded by other people my age who are excited about learning and becoming consultants,” says Braxton. “It will also be nice to be working in a dynamic environment where the problems I will be working on will vary.”
