Where They’re Headed: Jacob Horn '13

Jacob Horn ’13 is working in the publications department of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the same place he interned the summer before his senior year.

In June, Jacob Horn ’13 began working in the publications department of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. In his new job, Horn is part of a team responsible for creating and managing all written materials a museum-goer might encounter—from catalogues and brochures to calendars, exhibition graphics, and labels. Horn works with two staff editors, copyediting, proofreading, fact checking, and coordinating exhibits and exhibitioners.

And he has history with the gig. In the summer of 2012, Horn interned in the Whitney’s publications department. When a full-time position  opened up later that summer, Horn reached out.
He enjoys the challenging environment of the museum. The Whitney is a preeminent institution devoted to the work of American artists, and it, therefore, showcases work by famous as well as little-known artists alike. “It’s cool to be able to learn from the collection here while also working on exhibitions that might be heralding the arrival of new artists whose work we haven’t fully grasped the importance of yet,” says Horn.
He was recently involved in the digitizing of the exhibition catalogue of Robert Irwin’s 1977 Whitney retrospective. He will also assist the museum in its 2015 move to a new building. “The new space gives the Museum a lot more gallery space,” says Horn, “and opportunities for new kinds of programming.”
