Associate Professor of Philosophy Jerry Miller and former Haverford philosopher Richard Bernstein recently discussed the philosophical underpinnings of scapegoating and structural violence. Their conversation—part of a year-long series of events initiated by Haverford President Kim Benston to examine the structural violence in the United States and its effect on issues of racial, economic, and social justice—preceded the Haverford-Bryn Mawr Chorale and Chorale Orchestra’s performance of Michael Tippett’s 1942 oratorio “A Child of Our Time,” a dramatic and philosophical musical response to the story of Herschel Grynspan and the events leading up to the Holocaust. That performance marked retiring Professor of Music Thomas Lloyd’s final concert as director of Choral and Vocal Studies Program, a position he’s held since 1996.
