Daniel Gordon ’14 will be one of 18 Dean’s Fellows from around the world joining the newly formed Yale-NUS College in Singapore, where he will have the opportunity to guide the school’s development. Founded in 2011 as a collaboration between Yale University and the National University of Singapore, the liberal arts college accepted its first class in 2013. Gordon’s duties will include mentoring members of the sophomore class, auditing a course each semester, and working on projects in the President’s Office.
Gordon says Haverford played a large role in his decision to take a job in education. “My role as an Upper Class Advisor last year showed me how engaging, challenging, and rewarding it is to advise and mentor students,” he says. “My work as [Students’ Council] Co-President exposed me to the complex problems that face institutions of higher learning today. My job at Yale-NUS College allows me to work in an area with which I am familiar, but in the context of a new school in Asia—in this way, it is a perfect transition for me.”
Gordon was actually introduced to Yale-NUS through his junior year position as Co-President. Yale-NUS was interested in Haverford’s Honor Code and student self-governance model, and they invited Gordon to speak at the student leadership colloquium for their inaugural freshman class. After attending the colloquium and seeing how engaged the students were, Gordon realized he would like to work with Yale-NUS after graduation.
