Some time in the next couple of months, political science major Emily Brown ’13 will receive her official Peace Corps assignment, realizing one of her lifelong dreams. Brown, a native of Essex, Conn., does not yet know where internationally the Peace Corps will send her, but she does know that she will live and work wherever she is placed for more than two years. Specifically, the program requires a total of three months of in-country training and 24 months of service.
“The longer term of service allows Peace Corps volunteers to become more integrated into the community they are helping,” says Brown. “I see this as going about giving aid in the right way—getting to know a community and its actual needs as opposed to applying resources to a perceived problem.” Brown has been told tentatively that she will be working in the field of public services and health.
