Last week, the Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery opened its first show of the new academic year: Field Guide. It is an exhibit of sculptures, mostly made of resin, plastic or found objects, by Associate Professor of Fine Arts Markus Baenziger, and it represents his first public exhibition at the College since he joined the faculty in the fall of 2010.
Baenziger’s work is inspired by the delicate beauty of nature, but has a deliberate artificiality due, in part, to its industrial materials. Field Guide, which was curated by Visiting Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature John Muse, challenges the relationship between the man-made and the natural, provoking reflection about human beings’ impact on our planet and vice versa.
Below is a gallery of pictures from the well-attended opening. But there is still plenty of time to catch the show in person. Field Guide runs through October 7. This afternoon, a gallery talk about the show featuring Baenziger, Muse and environmental scientist Helen White will take place at 4:30.
